Day 166

Day 166 of the #365drawingchallenge is a commissioned Batman – The Maxx: Arkham Dreams issue 1 variant sketch cover. This was really exciting for me for a couple reasons. Chief among them is this is the first variant cover I’ve ever drawn. So I was fairly nervous. You only get one shot, so if you screw up the client will definitely see it. Another thing is I love Batman and The Maxx, so this is kind of a dream comic for me to work on. This client was actually an old customer who bought my book and got me to sketch at a comic show years ago, and he remembered me for my Maxx sketches. So it’s really cool that I’ve gained some kind of notoriety as a Maxx artist. That someone would think of me when it comes to one of my favorite comic characters, well that just makes me feel really good.

All that said I took awhile to get going on this and went back and forth many times trying to come up with the layout. In the end I went for both characters striking pretty iconic poses, and I drew batman in a bit more of a cartoonish style that represents his look in this book. And I’m happy with the way it turned out. It definitely has an indie comic vibe, which I feel is fitting. So here’s hoping I get to do some more of these in the future.
