Day 300
Day 300 of the #365drawingchallenge continues #31DaysOfHalloween with a request for the creepypasta sensation, Slenderman. For a little while my son was really interested in Slenderman and even wore a costume for Halloween. We played through a pretty decent portion of the video game on PS3, although I must admit I didn’t like it all that much. It relied very heavily on atmosphere while the actual gameplay was very basic and the enemy AI felt very random. We rented the movie, but it was really boring and we didn’t finish it. We tried watching that Marble Hornets YouTube channel that everyone seems to hail as the best adaptation of the Slenderman story, but it was really slow moving so we didn’t get too far. So I guess what I’m saying is like a lot of things that are “internet scary”, I just don’t find it all that scary and I don’t feel the fan reaction is actually warranted given the limited premise. People love to build their own lore because they feel some ownership. I feel very much the same way about FNAF. It’s funny too, other parents I know find Slenderman terrifying because they associate it with a cult and widespread panic because of that case with those stupid girls attacking their friend because they can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality. I do like the character design, which I think also played a huge part in the popularity.
