Day 77

Day 77 of the #365drawingchallenge is a commissioned piece featuring the Godfather when he says his famous offer line. This was created for a postcard mailer that the art will be resized for.

I really like the way this turned out. I’ve long been a fan of noir style blinds in the background, Black Snow fans may recognize that I’ve used similar images before. I toyed with blurring them here or making the lines not quite straight, but in the end I thought the simple square look worked as a frame and the abstract sharp lines popped better. I had a teacher in college who worked on the sound design for these movies. So that was cool. And he had a lot of stories.

I love a good gangster movie. And being an Italian American who’s family has some distant relatives with mob ties, I find a weird warped sense of pride and identity in them. That said, I’ve never been a huge Godfather fan. I’ve been meaning to sit down and give them a rewatch. Maybe I will soon. In the past the pace just felt so plodding. Now give me Goodfellas and I’ll rewatch that pretty much endlessly.

I’m really happy with my shadow work and hatching these days. It feels like I’ve really landing in a good place with the shading and honed in on a style.
