Day 173

Day 173 of the #365drawingchallenge is Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango. I was a big point and click game fan when it came to computer games in the 90s and early 00s, and I loved this game for the afterlife premise, Dia De Los Muertos aesthetics, strange humor and just the overall art style. It ranks among the best. I will say that I do not have the same patients for this genre as an adult. For whatever reason I have a tougher time actually sitting down and getting into these types of games now. Maybe it’s just that I have less time to play and these are generally games that have a slow pace and lengthy stories. Not to mention how long it can take to solve a puzzle.

This was a lot of fun to draw and I’d like to do a lot more with the day of the dead art style. I just love it. Always have. Kind of like how I’ve always liked tikis. I’ve considered doing a comic strip in the style. This was also nice because it goes back to my simple black and white, which I’m all about. The white hi-lights on his pants and shoes, the abstract white smoke, the subtle grey shading, and the deep dark black shadows…this is my jam.
