Day 191

Day 191 of the #365drawingchallenge is a request based on the intro from the 90’s Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark? I loved this show growing up. I used to stay up late on Saturday nights for Snick to watch it. I was pretty much into anything horror related, so this was perfect for me. I wished I could join a group like the Midnight Society. I have the first couple seasons on DVD and have watched them with my son. He’s a lot like me in his love for horror, but this show in particular has some episodes that scare him. It can be pretty frightening stuff considering the target audience.

My son really wanted me to draw the title screen, which I thought was an interesting challenge. I like how dark it is and wanted to play off of that. It also uses orange and blue lighting in a way that I really wanted to focus on. And with any of these things you have to try and replicate the font, which can be either really easy or a total chore. It was somewhere in the middle here. This strikes me as something you might see on a cover, like a DVD or book cover, and I like that. I went fairly abstract with the actual use of lighting to create the shapes of the hand. I’d like to draw some more from this show, maybe the kids around the campfire or some of the more iconic monsters. So there’s a good chance you could see those in the future.
